That was beautifully phrased. I’ve heard binary transness described, not as someone on one side of a spectrum moving to the other side, but as an added third dimension that can’t be perceived if we stick to a rigid sex=gender paradigm. The full realization of oneself as something other than what they have been told they are changes the substance of experiencing “manhood” and “womanhood” altogether.
I completely agree with you, the fact that you can find hundreds of gender categorizations these days is indicative of the hunger people feel for self-exploration and authenticity.
I still haven’t read Whipping Girl, but I have heard her take on transphobia as a form of misogyny was ground breaking. From what you’ve said, Serano sounds right up my alley, so I hope I get the chance to read her work soon!
